So what is a charger plate and how do you use it? A charger plate is also known as a service plate or chop plate. It does not have food come in contact with it but instead serves as a base typically for first course dishes. You’ll find these plates in a variety of materials – wood, glass, metal, china, mother of pearl and even woven grasses. They can be plain orelegant, round or square – they are limited only by the imagination.
Traditionally, a charger plate is set on the table from the beginning and the first courses, soups and salads are served from them and then they’re typically removed and replaced with the main entrée plate. However, A Stylish Kitchen believes it is your home and your meal and if your charger compliments your dinner plate as well then why not leave it? You would probably want to take it away before serving dessert however.
